Thoughts on Framing

A frame is very important. It protects a print from wear and tear, from sunlight and dust and finger prints. The way a print is framed can completely change the look and feel of a piece; a great frame can really make a print sing!

For shows and exhibitions, we always try to have custom frames made for our prints. We use our local framer; Sarah at ArtForm in Shipley. She has a great choice of mouldings and frame types and makes the frames to measure so the print fits perfectly. We have the option of using UV proof glass to stop any direct sunlight affecting the print or paper, and FSC certified wood moulding which is great as sustainability is important to us. Sarah also does a great job of getting the print clean and straight in the frame (nothing more annoying than that speck of dust or dirt in a freshly sealed frame when we try to do it ourselves!) There are local framers in most towns and from our experience they’re usually friendly and willing to help with frame choices, mounting recommendations and general framing!

We like to float mount our prints, which means the edges of the paper are visible and not hidden behind a mount. The cotton paper we print onto has beautiful deckle edges which we like to show off :)

Our customers have also had success framing our prints with ready made frames. Our medium prints measure 38 x 28cm, which is just under A3 size (42 x 30cm) and our large prints are 56 x 38cm, which is just under A2 (60 x 42cm). So frames designed for these A sizes will fit our prints leaving a small border of space around the outside, perfect for float mounting. Ikea and other retailers also sell 50 x 40 and 70 x 50cm frames which would leave a slightly larger, approx 6cm, border which we think also looks nice.
